SpaceXAI, the AI lab formerly known as xAI, released Grok Imagine Image 2.0 on 7 August 2026 as a new Quality Mode for Grok’s image generator on the web and in the iOS and Android apps. The model adds region-specific editing tools, five-image reference blending and automatic aspect ratio resizing, and it ranks second worldwide on both the Arena text-to-image and image-edit leaderboards, behind OpenAI’s GPT-Image-2. Grok Imagine Image 2.0 is available now inside Grok; a dedicated API is listed as coming soon.

What can Grok Imagine Image 2.0 do?

Grok Imagine Image 2.0 is built around editing as a core feature rather than an add-on. A Magic Wand tool changes only the region a user points at and leaves the rest of the image untouched, a segmentation tool selects precise areas to modify, and a background removal tool exports subjects with a transparent background for use in other software. Multi-Ref Editing accepts up to five input images in a single generation, removing the manual compositing step that previously required stitching sources together by hand.

A Smart Resize feature recomposes one image across nine aspect ratios, from a 1:2 tall banner to a 2:1 wide banner, with the model filling in the new frame itself. SpaceXAI says the model was trained for fidelity across photography, design and illustration, with particular attention to typography and layout, so dense, multi-part visuals hold together and small text renders sharply.

The release also adds templates: preconfigured workflows for product shots, professional headshots and portraits, e-commerce listings, icons, character sprites, streaming emojis, merchandise designs and marketing posters, so users supply only the inputs. A further feature generates characters, locations and props separately while keeping visual style consistent across the set, which SpaceXAI positions as a stepping stone toward full video production workflows.

Grok Imagine Image 2.0 benchmarks: how it compares to GPT-Image-2 and other models

SpaceXAI’s own figures, drawn from the public Arena text-to-image and image-edit leaderboards as of 7 August 2026, put the faster low variant of Grok Imagine Image 2.0 in second place worldwide in both categories. It scores an Elo rating of 1,439 in the Image Edit Arena, behind OpenAI’s GPT-Image-2 at 1,463, and 1,320 in the Text-to-Image Arena, again trailing GPT-Image-2’s 1,380. These are figures SpaceXAI itself reports from a public leaderboard rather than an independent benchmark study, and the announcement does not include additional methodology beyond the Arena standings.

Below Grok Imagine Image 2.0 in the published rankings sit Reve 2.1, Meta’s Muse-Image, Alibaba’s Qwen-Image-3.0-Pro, Google’s Gemini image models and ByteDance’s SeedDream. SpaceXAI also says the new model beats the Quality variant of its predecessor by a wide margin on the same tests.

Grok Imagine Image 2.0 pricing and availability

Grok Imagine Image 2.0 is live now as the Quality Mode inside Grok on grok.com/imagine and in the Grok iOS and Android apps, at no separate charge beyond a user’s existing Grok access. A dedicated Imagine Image 2.0 API is listed as coming soon, with no date given. SpaceXAI’s existing Grok Imagine Image API prices the standard tier at $0.02 per image and the quality tier at $0.05 per image, at both 1K (1024×1024) and 2K (2048×2048) resolution, a flat per-image fee regardless of prompt length.

Why is xAI now called SpaceXAI?

The SpaceXAI name reflects a corporate change rather than a new company. SpaceX acquired xAI on 2 February 2026 in an all-stock deal that valued the combined group at close to 1.25 trillion dollars, and on 6 July 2026 the merged business revealed its new identity as SpaceXAI, with a new logo and X account. The Grok product name, apps, SuperGrok subscription and developer API kept their existing branding; only the parent company’s name and logo changed. SpaceX itself, including xAI and X, began trading on Nasdaq under the ticker SPCX in June 2026.

Grok Imagine Image 2.0 is available now at the official Grok website and in the Grok mobile apps, with full detail in SpaceXAI’s Grok Imagine announcement.
