Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the EU AI Act?

The EU AI Act is the world’s first comprehensive legal framework for artificial intelligence, setting unified rules for AI development, deployment, and use across the European Union. Based on a risk-oriented approach, it seeks to ensure that AI systems are transparent, reliable, and safe, while upholding fundamental rights and EU values.

  • When do I need to comply with the EU AI Act?

The Act has a staggered implementation timeline. After entering into force on August 1, 2024, prohibitions take effect in February 2025, general-purpose AI requirements in August 2025, and most obligations including high-risk AI systems in August 2026.

  • How do I know if my AI system is considered high-risk?

High-risk AI systems include those used in critical areas such as employment, education, law enforcement, and essential infrastructure. These systems must comply with strict requirements including risk management, data governance, transparency, and human oversight.

  • Does the EU AI Act apply to my company if we're not based in the EU?

Yes, if your AI system or its outputs are used within the EU, then it is mandatory to comply to the new regulations. Companies outside the EU that offer AI services to EU customers must designate authorized representatives in the EU to coordinate compliance efforts.

  • What are the penalties for non-compliance?

Organizations can face significant fines for non-compliance, ranging from €7.5 million or 1.5% of worldwide annual turnover to €35 million or 7% of worldwide annual turnover, depending on the type of violation.
